Within Technology, Service and Operations, Research & Innovation has a vital role to play supporting the development of new opportunities and in delivering improvements to the customer experience of existing services.
Applications are invited for a Senior Researcher role in Wi-Fi and Wireless Convergence.
The key purpose of this role is to conduct research into, develop proof-of-concepts for, and support the down-streaming of advanced Wi-Fi capabilities, wireless diagnostics techniques and converged Wi-Fi / cellular services. The post holder will be part of a small research team addressing the future needs of the business in both public and private Wi-Fi and in the convergence of Wi-Fi and cellular in the evolution towards 5G services. This role will involve working with a team of experts in Research as well as our stakeholders in the TSO Platforms, CIO and other lines of business.
To carry out research into Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi diagnostics and wireless convergence.
To develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of the state of the art in delivery of Wi-Fi and wireless services.
To develop and maintain strong relationships with customers in the BT Lines of Business, stakeholders in BT TSO teams (such as CIO, the CPE Platform), and stakeholders in other research teams (both internal and external).
To create and deliver excellent reports and presentations, presenting complex analysis results to customers and stakeholders in a clear and concise manner with an appropriate level of detail.
To support R&I’s patent strategy by creating innovative intellectual property which could be protected, and working with IPD to develop it into filed patents.
To enhance BT’s reputation in this field by publishing work externally and taking opportunities to represent BT at conferences and industry events.When required, to provide strategic insight and analysis of technology options, including development of commercial models in support of business case creation.
Where appropriate, to engage in relationships with external suppliers, consultants, partners and universities in order to gain new insights and technical capabilities or to accelerate the exploitation of data.
A degree-level qualification in a scientific, mathematical or engineering discipline is required, ideally to PhD level.
Essential skills & experience:
A scientific, mathematical or engineering background with experience in wireless communications.
In depth understanding of Wi-Fi.
Strong software development skills using languages such as Java, C & C .
Ability to work creatively and cooperatively as part of a small research team.
Excellent communication and presentation skills and with ability to persuade and influence internal and external customers.
Experience of leading self-managed tasks within technical projects, liaising with project customers in the business units to define scope and outcomes.
Desirable skills & experience:
Developer-level familiarity with Linux.
In-depth knowledge of network protocols and IP architectures.
Experience of software development for Android and iOS.
Working knowledge of tools and techniques for radio and network modelling / simulation, such as ns-3 and MatLab.
Working knowledge of data analytics, big data (Hadoop, Spark, Pig) and traditional relational database systems (SQL).
Working knowledge of data visualisation techniques/software.
Understanding of pattern recognition/processing and AI techniques.
Understanding of mathematical optimisation techniques.
Broad understanding of cellular networking (particularly LTE).
Working knowledge of web server technology (HTML / CSS / Java Servlets).
Linux system administration.
Experience in applied research.
