We are looking for people with Python or Java coding skills to join our development teams creating Software Defined Networks (SDN) and Telemetry solutions.

Any knowledge of Service Orchestration, Software Defined Networks, Network Virtual Functions or Telemetry is highly desirable.

The purpose of the Specialist software engineer role is to create, lead and implement significant technical solutions that could impact internally and/or externally. Specifically in this role you:

  • May be responsible for larger complex projects

  • Provide assurance for other software engineers including resolving complex issues, coaching & mentoring and contributing to their learning.

  • May be responsible for direct customer interaction with your peers.

  • Need to set software engineering standards & continually improving them within projects

  • May act asa software consultant, contributing to architecture and solution design decisions towards the technology roadmap

  • May be a subject matter expert (SME) and lead on related work packages and setting technical direction. This includes driving transformational activities using innovation, reuse & automation.

  • May be responsible for working with third party suppliers on integrating and delivering a quality solution.

What you'll be doing

Core activities

There are a number of activities a Specialist Software Engineering role could be involved in:

  • Primary responsibility for a software defined network solution or telemetry solutions for potentially millions of consumer, business and mobile users.

  • May be responsible for designing solutions for mid-tier Global Service customers (typically 2,000 to 10,000 users), or designing elements within a wider solution for a top-tier customer. Responsible for the technology or solution across a team of 10-20 depending on the team configuration and development approach

  • Focus on continuous improvement and driving changes.

  • Willing to learn and understand about our Network Services, Design and Solutions to drive our software services.

Key / unique decisions made by this role

  • Decide when the best course to deliver customer requirements is to challenge current standards or frameworks and be able to justify these while operating within the governance processes.

  • Decide on recommended learning activities for the team.

  • Can decide when to use a new tool subject within overarching architectural, licensing or strategic constraints; accountable for driving the case for making this change to a new tool, including benefits and impact of change; decide on integration choices.

  • Decide the best course of action during an urgent or complex situation for problems with solutions developed within their team/s.

  • Decisions are likely to be shared with an architect.

We'll also need to see these on your CV

  • Good experience working in a software team on object orientated applications. They must demonstrate that they have good understanding of (and real practical experience of) working in an agile team writing maintainable, well designed and thoroughly tested code.

  • Demonstrating good software engineering methodology & practices

  • A good appreciation of the commercial and non-functional aspects of the commercial, and non-functional aspects of software projects.

  • Minimum 2.2 STEM degree (or equivalent qualification, or equivalent experience in software development)
