What you'll be doing

The role holder has responsibility for leading strategic evaluations and the strategic planning process for Openreach. He/she plays a key role in shaping the strategy, creating & aligning plans and leading key strategic initiatives for Openreach, for recommendation to the Executive Team, Openreach or PLC Board for decision. He/she leads virtual teams as part of the strategic planning cycles and in the evaluation of strategic questions. Engagement is required at all levels and across the different functions of OpenreachLeading the end to end strategic planning process for Openreach (encompassing the Medium Term and Annual Operating Plans) to deliver our future vision underpinned by a fully costed and aligned financial plan.

  • Managing the Exec team and Board interlock in relation to the strategic planning cycle and required governance and decision making

  • Ensuring operational alignment to the strategy to include development of scorecards to ensure effective execution of the strategy

  • Leading key strategic evaluations and strategic projects across Openreach, providing analyses and recommendations to senior level sponsors including Executive Team

  • Integrating closely with the Market Insight team to ensure that our strategy addresses all key environmental drivers

  • Working closely with the virtual strategic planning team including strategy, commercial, finance & regulatory to identify, prioritise and address primary strategic challenges

  • Managing the Risks associated with the Openreach strategy including regular reviews and evaluations in line with the agreed risk governance framework

Qualifications/experience:

  • Demonstrable experience of leading significant business impacting strategy development processes and related strategic evaluations & projects

  • Highly credible with senior leaders and able to provide & lead analytical and innovative thinking with respect to strategic planning and associated activities and priorities.

  • Ability to challenge and influence appropriately and effectively across a broad range of strategic topics and issues.

  • Ability to cut through complexity and deliver synthesised & compelling recommendations based on sound reasoning and judgement. to drive decision making (written and presented)

  • Strong understanding of external and internal drivers spanning the Telco landscape, customer, competition, regulation, technology and Openreach’s products and economic structures.

  • Strong business acumen and commercial experience including ability to create and lead engagement around key business cases to enable decision making.

  • Capability to create and lead senior matrix teams, not necessarily with line management control, from across the Openreach and wider BT community as appropriate in respect of our strategy development cycles and commitments.

  • MBA and/or other degree or professional qualification, or equivalent experience
