BT Principal Economist in London, United Kingdom

Principal Economist

London

Our purpose is to use the power of communications to make a better world. For each other, for our customers, for society and our communities. We need you to help us do this.

Why this role matters

Understanding economic drivers and acting on this insight are critical to the long term strategic success of BT. That’s where the Group economics team comes in. We:

i. enable senior leaders to make successful business decisions and exploit commercial opportunities;

ii. develop compelling regulatory and public policy positions and associated advocacy; and

iii. engage with external bodies (like Ofcom, consumer bodies and government) to influence their thinking and the application of their powers to BT so that their activities are beneficial to BT and its stakeholders.

The Chief Economist’s team (CET) is a pan-BT “Centre of Excellence” providing economic thinking and analysis to further key commercial, regulatory, policy and strategy goals wherever it is required in BT. We analyse the markets in which we operate, and help to make sure that our strategies are based on sound economics

What you'll be doing

Working within the CET, you will lead economic workstreams for regulatory reviews and competition law matters in the UK and elsewhere (as may be required). You will have overall accountability to the Chief Economist to ensure high quality economic analysis and thought leadership for these matters. You will be asked to lead teams and will have the ability to inspire others through taking personal ownership and demonstrating commitment to successful outcomes. You are someone who is not afraid to challenge the status quo and who holds others to account.

As part of a collaborative team you will:

i. identify key regulatory opportunities and risks (from an economic perspective) and apply best practice and innovative thinking to support BT in managing these issues;

ii. provide clear and concise economic advice and briefings to BT senior management and business colleagues;

iii. represent BT in discussions with key stakeholders, in particular Ofcom and DCMS, and lead in the preparation of consultation responses on key economic issues;

iv. act as the main contact for Ofcom Directors of Economics assigned to regulatory reviews;

v. engage proactively with other functions including legal, regulatory, strategy and competition finance to ensure that economic input is combined with other inputs as appropriate;

vi. help to develop operational practices and role model behaviours which help us work in an agile manner and with the best prospect of shaping the debate;

vii. ensure that BT has access to the best economic advisors and manage their input where required;

viii. develop your reputation and connections amongst the wider economics community externally in order to help promote BT's views in relation to wider communications sector stakeholders.

You will be joining a team of highly motivated economists and will be given the opportunity and support to manage your own career.

We'll also need to see these on your CV

As an economist with some experience, you will have knowledge of regulation in telecoms and potentially other sectors. You may have developed your skills in a consultancy, industry, a regulatory body or in a government department. We expect you will have:

  • a strategic and curious mindset balancing short-term critical issues with longer-term regulatory and industry horizon-scanning, and an ability to anticipate and manage change;

  • excellent communication with the ability to influence at all levels of the organisation (including ExCo, and the Group CEO Group CFO) and key external stakeholders

  • the skills required for economic analysis including familiarity with quantitative and qualitative techniques which are commonly used in a regulatory and competition economics context and particularly market analysis;

  • experience of helping others achieve results and the ability to work collaboratively with other specialists inside and outside BT; and

six to eight years relevant work experience and a Bachelors and a Masters in Economics.
